Protests in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities, set off by a 10-cent hike in public transport fares, have clearly moved beyond that issue to tap into widespread frustration in Brazil about a heavy tax burden, politicians widely viewed as corrupt and woeful public education, health and transport systems and come as the nation hosts the Confederations Cup soccer tournament and prepares for next month’s papal visit. I sure hope you are seeing a bunch of stuff about Brazil, either on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook or TV. But I need you to understand what is going on. What’s truly going on around here. So I prepared this masterpost, a list of links that should explain this to you!

HEY GUYS, I HAVE SOMETHING VERY VERY IMPORTANT TO SAY ABOUT THE WORLD CUP IN BRAZIL. PLEASE READ.

partyingwithgarth:

Since last week a lot of protests have been happening in Brazil. Some of you may have hard of it. Apparently they all started because of twenty cents, but that’s not the truth!

Let me explain some things:

  • Most part of brazilian people survive with R$678 about U$314
  • The price of the buses are twenty cents more expensive now
  • In a month it means less R$12 or U$6 to the person that receives the salary menioned above

Now you might be thinking? What do this have to do with the World Cup.

Well, billions of reais are being spent to built stadiums while people are dying because hospitals in the whole country barely have beds for the sick people, the machines are broken or old, in some places there are no doctors, the builldings are falling apart, hundreds of people, from toddlers to elderly, starve to death, another hundred are living in the streets because there are no houses enough for everybody (and the money spent until now could buy more than 2,000,000 houses)…. there are no significant investiments on education…. there is a social program here that helps people from public schools to get into colleges. The govenment would rather GIVE us our place in a university than have us learn properly on basic education and high school, we don’t learn A LOT of things, they just let us pass the tests. There are kids on 7th grade that doesn’t know how to write or read properly!!!!!!

We are not safe anywhere. not even inside our own houses. People are killed by minors if they don’t have money (or if its too little money) to give them. Thieves are setting fire to people after they steal their things. WE HAVE NO SECUTIRY!

I can’t even begin to talk about the traffic on the streets. People take 3 hours or more to get to their works or to come back home due to the impossible traffic. Everyday there are flights being cancelled,  the airports can’t suply our own needs, it will be a chaos with a lot of foreigners THAT WILL OBVIOUSLY BE TREATED WELL while we will be treated like idiots that have the obligations to wait more than the rest.

PLEASE, if you are planning on coming to Brazil next year I BEG YOU don’t come. Lifes are being wasted because of this World Cup!!

My people went to the streets, pacifically, claiming for our President to invest on education, health, public transport, decent housing and they got shot by the police. JOURNALISTS GOT SHOT BY THE POLICE. What does it mean? That they shouldn’t film and take pictures of what was going on? THIS IS A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY.

No one should be shot, being a journalist, a manifestant, or just a pedestrian trying to go home. We were just using our FREEDOM OF SPEECH to claim for justice!!!!

I’m studying to be a journalist, and I’m so tired of seeing the biggets newspapers and television stations PRETENDING THAT THERE’S NOTHING GOING ON.

I’m tired of seeing my people die homeless and starving.

I’m sick of hearing that Brazil is a country of beautiful lands and people.

I’m tired of this opressive system

I’m tired of living in a fake democracy

I’m just tired…

SO I BEG YOU, PLEASE DON’T COME TO BRAZIL FOR THE WORLD CUP IN 2014.

PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE TO THE WOLRD

HELP US BUILT A COUNTRY THAT WE CAN BE PROUD OF

A COUNTRY THAT WE CAN LOVE

HELP US TEACH OUR KIDS TO BE PATRIOTS BECAUSE THEIR COUNTRY IS A RESPECTFUL AND EQUAL CONTRY!

PLEASE HELP US!

I’m so very sorry for the long text but if you got to read until the end A BIG THANK YOU!

Your help can help us save thousands os lifes!!

First: my english is not perfect, so if I write something wrong, please don’t mind.
That’s what is happening in BRAZIL (Brasil in portuguese) lately. Since last week many people are protesting in different cities, going to the street to fight for their rights. They are asking for better conditions about our public transport, for better schools, better hospitals and we want people to know that WE DO NOT NEED THIS WORLD CUP NOW. We need other investiments! Brazil finally woke up to the reality and we decided to do something about it! Tomorrow we are gonna protest in my city and I will go. The problem is that police and government, both are reacting with violece against us. You can click here and check what the television will not show, thats what the police is doing with us. They spent billions to manage this world cup and the corruption that happened was something unbelievable
THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW THE TRUTH.
We chose this moment because now the world is looking to us, ‘cause of the confederations cup. Our whole country is united and almost all the teenagers and students are together in this. PLEASE SUPPORT US, many countries are making protests all around the world also supporting our revindications. Please reblog this post if you see it, the world needs to know what’s really happening. AGAIN, CLICK HERE AND SEE WHAT THE POLICE IS DOING AGAINST US. The television doesn’t show anything, they only support the government and try to make the people who are protesting look as the bad side. WE NEED SUPPORT, WE NEED YOU TO KNOW THE TRUTH. Thank you so much!

DON’T GO TO THE WORLD CUP. please. I live in Brazil, and hosting the world cup is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. We need schools. We need hospitals. We need jobs. We need teachers. WE DON’T NEED A FUCKING WOLRD CUP. THIS IS A FUCKING JOKE. We are spending money that could be used to all those things above. IT WILL COST AROUND 30 BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS. IT’S MORE THAN THE PAST THREE WORLD CUPS TOGETHER. there are people dying in hospital lines cuz the are not doctors enough. TEACHER DON’T SHOW UP TO THE FUCKING CLASS CUZ THEIR PAYMENT IS MISERABLE. So please, reblog this, and spread #IMNOTGOINGTOTHEWORLDCUP. IS NOT WHAT THIS COUNTRY NEEDS RIGHT NOW

tristikov:

If you weren’t aware, shit is going down in Brasil, much like the massive protests going on in Turkey right now. One of the big issues people are protesting is the amount of money and attention being spent on hosting the world cup despite far more pressing domestic issues such as the large amounts of poverty and crime in the country, as well as general discontent with the government and politicians who are widely seen as ineffective and corrupt.
